About
The ‘Assen – Groningen Bicycle Highway’ project is an exemplary project for Groningen and Drenthe. A new cycle path will be constructed between Assen and Groningen. Not just a cycle path – but a 4-metre wide concrete bicycle ‘highway’ that is characterised by the absence of obstacles along the way, which will be convenient for the ride! The cycle path connects to the P+Rs of both cities.

Ambitions Drenthe and Groningen
The idea for a bicycle highway comes from the ambitions of the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen, together with the municipalities of Haren, Groningen, Tynaarlo and Assen:
- Fewer people in cars to reduce traffic on the A28
- Increasing accessibility to Drenthe and Groningen
- Strengthen tourism
- Making people live healthier lives
Planning Bicycle Highway
The final picture of the Assen Groningen Bicycle Highway will be completed at the end of 2017. The highway will then measure a total of 26 km. At the end of 2017, the first part of the Bicycle Highway (6 km) will be constructed. In 2018, the stretch from Assen to Tynaarlo (9 km) will be completed. The section between Tynaarlo and the Punt will also be made suitable (4 km). From 2019 onwards, the remaining 7 km will be realised.
